Our little learners were thrilled to see our special guest, Recycleman, when he came to visit our center. The children were instantly engaged for his special show. We found his very own Recycleman book on the floor and we listened along.
Recycleman asked if we had seen red, yellow and green colours on our bins at our homes as well. We realised that these colours are on the lids of our wheelie bins at home, and that the bin with the YELLOW lid is for recycling. We helped Recycleman find his recycle bin. This bin had a happy face on the front, and Recycleman told us how happy he gets when we put the right things in the recycling bin, as it is a great way to help the planet.
He showed us where he lives, which is in Australia, just like us! He said that Australia is where the aboriginal people live and that they have looked after Australia for thousands of years. He even had his aboriginal instrument there – a DIDGERIDOO! And played all the awesome sounds, and then even animal noises!
He also showed us the side of the bin and all the different things that can go in our recycling bins at home. Recycleman asked us if we wanted to be recycling superheroes. Yes! He transformed us into superheroes just like Recycleman with our own capes. We were all very excited!
Recycleman had just taught us that paper is his favourite thing to recycle as paper is made from trees, and trees help make the air we breathe. When Recycleman stood up, all of his paper fell out of his box on our classroom floor. We quickly went around to help him pick up all of the paper.
But what else can we recycle?
Recycleman said we were now ready for the big game – the plastic recycling game. Recycleman told us that this is
his favorite shape is a triangle and if we looked on all of our friends’ capes, we could see those triangles there as well. He said we should always look out for this shape. To start the game, he tipped his bin upside down, and all of the plastic fell out, and it was up to us to find those special triangles, so we know it can go in the recycling bin. We found the triangles and then went and showed him so then we could put it in the recycling bin. We looked on the side of the recycling bin again to make sure that we were allowed to put them in the bin.
As Recycleman was leaving, he said that we can be superheroes whenever we wish. Superheroes make the planet a better place for everyone to live, and if we are recycling correctly, we are being superheroes because recycling makes the planet a better place for us to live!
