Our children had the wonderful opportunity to take part in Urban Grow’s “First Nations Knowledge: Living and Learning” incursion!
It was a meaningful and engaging experience that introduced the children to the rich and diverse cultures, traditions and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Throughout the session, the children were encouraged to listen, observe, ask questions and learn through hands-on experiences. They had the opportunity to see a range of traditional artefacts and cultural tools, learning about how they were made and how they were used in everyday life.
One of the highlights was learning about traditional fire-making techniques. The children were fascinated to discover how natural materials and traditional knowledge were used to create fire, and how fire has been an important part of caring for Country.
We also had lots of fun acting out different native animals, understanding through movement how animals interact and explore their environment.
The children were also captivated by Dreamtime storie ‘Tiddalick the Frog’, listening carefully as they learned about the deep connections between people, animals, land and Country. These stories provided an opportunity for the children to appreciate the importance of storytelling and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.
It was a wonderful day of learning, discovery and participation. The children showed great curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored the artefacts, listened to stories, learned about traditional practices, enjoyed music and dancing, and developed a deeper appreciation for First Nations culture and connection to Country.
Thank you to Derek and Urban Grow for providing such a memorable and hands-on learning experience for our children!
